Mosaic Workshop
Date: January 7 and 9, 2016
Time: 9am to 12pm and 9:30am to 10:30am
The Mosaic Workshop will run on two separate days, with the first
session dedicated to learning the basics; and the second session dedicated to
completing the artwork. It is an opportunity for your child to attune to his or
her creativity and simultaneously engaging cognitively as knew skills are
learned. It may be especially beneficial for children who appreciate tasks that
require focus and that enjoy the arts. For more expressive or conscious
children, it may allow them to create a special piece that is symbolic
and meaningful to them.
For those that have never thought much
about mosaics.
here is a simple but more humanistic
perspective.
Why not take the time to further explore the
meanings that other's see in this art form?

Fringe World is a seasonal event,
consisting of many small participant and spectator events. The event designers created a highly pleasing
aesthetic landscape through lighting, decoration and colour choices. The visual
elements are best described as a distinct - yet blurred mixture of the decades.
One that is both vintage and modern; old and new; foreign but familiar. The
decade styles range from the 50s to the 90s and back again, especially
with so many 'modern day' 1940s-looking hipsters amongst the attendees. Fringe
World offers a very unique appeal - one of a flourishing new culture and
identity for Perth. The event is very much affective in nature, based around
entertainment, food and the arts - highly cultural.Fringe World feels new and
inviting. It is youthful and but very diverse. It was not exclusive to any age
group or demographic.
For
those however that love feeling young, there was roller skating!

I
was able to convince my husband to come rollerskating with me. I felt a sense
of pride in the fact that I am a #90s kid and that I had the opportunity to
briefly relive my childhood. They played a variety of music at the roller
skating rink, including my husband's favourite - Ghostbusters. After a
while, we got too confident and traded our blades for skates. It wasn't long
before I fell and dragged him down with me by his arm! Either way, we had a lot
of fun - and I he even let me get a cute photo for my blog.
Australia Day
Perth
Date: January 26, 2016
Time: 3pm to 8:30pm
Location: Langley Park, Perth
Cost: Free
Australia day has been a nationally unified and celebrated event since 1994 (Australia Day History, 2016). The event marks the arrival of the first fleet of convict ships from England to Australia in 1788 (About Our National Day, 2016) and is held annually on January the 26th. Australia Day is typically coordinated and overseen by the Australia Day National Network, which operates under the National Australia Day Council (NADC). The NADC are a government owned enterprise that are responsible for defining the vision and direction for Australia day throughout the country (NADC, 2016). This year's Perth celebrations took place at Langley Park, beside the Swan River. The City of Perth provided a diverse programme; ranging from children's theatre (Celebration Zone South Perth, 2016) to interactive science exhibits, motocross shows, markets and much more (Langley Park Entertainment Zone, 2016) It all began at 3pm and concluded with a wonderful display of 'Skyworks' at 8:30pm which lasted half an hour!

Now I would love to tell you that I was there
amongst the crowd, standing in unity and basking in a common National pride as
the polytechnic display lit up the scene - but the truth is that I didn't make
it. It wasn't until 7:50pm that we actually left the house, for a display that
started at 8pm... Did I mention it takes 30 minutes to drive to Perth?
A young boy's voice began to introduce the soon-to-start fireworks, through the radio. My disappointment was evident. Suddenly we pulled off the road and into a random space along South street which had a clear view of the Australia Day fireworks. It seemed that many other cars had pulled over to see the display also.
It was not the way I had planned to celebrate Australia day - on the side of the road with a 20km view of the fireworks; but in a strange way, I felt like I was witnessing something of greater meaning. There was something pleasing about seeing people scattered along the bridge, taking part of a popular tradition that transcends into a higher sense of belonging and national identity. That was the day I finally understood what Australia Day has always strived to promote - "I am, You are - We are Australian"
